On the initiative of Catholicos Nerses Ashtaraketsi, the construction of a new school began in Tbilisi in 1822, and two years later the school opened with 2 classes and 20 students. Before the construction of the school, the Catholicos had already developed a detailed charter regarding the duration of studies, the duties of teachers, and the rules of conduct of students.
